Whereas, the Carnegie Foundation’s Boyer Commission on
undergraduate education at research universities recognized the
University of Delaware as one of five national leaders in providing
active learning experiences unavailable to undergraduates at most
research universities, and
Whereas, the National
Science Foundation has recognized UD as one of 10 institutions
nationwide to exhibit “ bold leadership” and “meaningful results” in
the integration of research and education,
and
Whereas, the vast majority of UD faculty,
including 90 percent in the sciences and engineering, participate in
supervising research for 700 undergraduates each semester,
and
Whereas, undergraduate research has been
instrumental in the success of the UD Honors Program and has
contributed to a 100 percent rate of graduate school placement for
UD’s McNair Scholars, as well as to the selection of UD students as
Rhodes, Truman and Marshall Scholars, and
Whereas, the
UD has served as the model for undergraduate research programs at 50
other colleges and universities and UD faculty have instructed
faculty from 100 universities across the U.S. and from 20 foreign
nations on inquiry-based learning and undergraduate research,
and
Whereas, the Reinvention Center, a national center
funded by the Carnegie Foundation that focuses on undergraduate
education at research universities, recently named the University of
Delaware as the model for undergraduate research and problem-based
learning, and recognized it along with only Princeton, Stanford and
Berkeley as exemplifying best practices in the successful engagement
of undergraduates at research universities,
Resolved,
that the Trustees do commend the University’s faculty and students
on achieving the highest standard of accomplishment in undergraduate
research and discovery learning and on the recognition of this
achievement as a national standard to be emulated by research
universities throughout
America.
