Environmental Engineering Student Wins DWRC Internship

Jimit Modi, a junior majoring in environmental engineering, has been selected for an Undergraduate Research Internship in Water Resources by the Delaware Water Resources Center (DWRC).

Modi will carry out his research under the advisement of Prof. Herb Allen. His project will address the kinetics of metal sorption and desorption on soil.

"The sorption/desorption process controls the amount of metal removed from or released to solution as water flows through soil," Allen explains. "Equilibrium is frequently not attained. Therefore, the reaction kinetics can be a primary factor in control of ground and surface water quality and in establishing the level of metal to which plants and soil-dwelling organisms will be exposed."

After the project is completed, Modi will present the results of his work at the Undergraduate Research Scholars Conference in April 2006. He will also submit a report on the project to DWRC.
