Moffatt - Nichol Award goes to Kobayashi

The John G. Moffatt - Frank E. Nichol Harbor and Coastal Engineering Award has been presented to Professor Nobuhisa Kobayashi of Newark, Delaware. Each year, the Moffatt - Nichol Award is given to a member of ASCE who has made significant contributions to the field of Coastal Engineering, either through written publication or practical service. Prof. Kobayashi received this award "in recognition of his service to the harbor and coastal engineering profession through his advancement of techniques for analyzing forces and run-up on coastal structures, for his effective professional leadership, and for his dedication to the training of future coastal engineers".

Dr. Kobayashi, a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the Center for Applied Coastal Research at the University of Delaware, is a graduate of both the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Ph.D., 1979) and Kyoto University in Japan (BCE, 1974 and MCE, 1976). He has been a leading researcher, engineer, and educator in coastal and harbor engineering for more than two decades, introducing new ideas and concepts that have been efficiently implemented to expand the engineering techniques available for coastal and harbor designs. Along with his graduate students, Prof. Kobayashi has developed time-dependent numerical models to improve quantitative understanding of the detailed mechanics of wind waves and design capabilities of armor units that protect harbor structures. These models have been shown to predict the reasonably detailed flow field and resulting armor response on coastal and harbor structures, and have been used to predict irregular wave run-up, overtopping, transmission, and reflection, as well as armor stability and movement. Because of Dr. Kobayashi's research and advancements, time-dependent numerical modeling of breaking and non-breaking waves on coastal structures has become a very active research field within coastal and harbor engineering.

In addition, Dr. Kobayashi has been an active member of ASCE and various other professional organizations for many years, serving on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Engineering from 1982 - 1999, and as Associate Editor of the Journal of Coastal Research since 1987. From 1995 to 1999, he was also a member of the ASCE Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering Division Executive Committee. Dr. Kobayashi wrote the Business Plan for COPRI and played a critical role in the successful establishment of COPRI in 2000. He has been an Honorary Member of the Coastal Education and Research Foundation since 2001, and has co-chaired the last two Coastal Structures Conferences. Dr. Kobayashi has been published over 200 times in multiple journals and books, both in English and in Japanese.

Nominate a Colleague Today for a COPRI/ASCE Award!
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is now accepting nominations for COPRI’s three awards for professional achievement. The deadline for nominations is November 1, 2003. These awards are a great opportunity to honor your colleagues who have contributed to the civil and harbor, coastal, and waterways engineering profession in significant ways. Please consider nominating a deserving COPRI/ASCE colleague for one of these awards!
