CEE
Students Win ASHE Scholarships
by Diane Kukich June 1, 2007 Three CEE students have been selected to receive the Fred Mueller Memorial Scholarship from the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE). Christopher Brendza, Shellie deMoss, and Steven (Kelly) Marshall are all members of the class of 2008. The scholarship is given by the First State Section of ASHE to students in UD's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering who are concentrating their studies in the areas of construction management or transportation engineering. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic performance, dedication towards career goals specifically in highway engineering and/or construction, participation in academic or professional societies, and related work experience. An annual Golf Classic serves as the sole funding mechanism for the program, which awards scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 per student. Since its inception, 31 scholarships totaling more than $52,000 have been awarded. The Golf Classic was renamed in 2000 after Fred Mueller, one of the original members of the Golf Classic Committee who played an instrumental part in the formation and development of the tournament, was killed in a car accident. "We are very grateful for the support ASHE has provided to our students through the scholarship program over the past decade," said Department Chair Michael Chajes. "Chris, Shellie, and Kelly are all excellent students and very deserving of this honor."
