Students to compete in national bridge competition

The scale-model bridge created by engineering students at UD took second place in regional competition.

5:01 p.m., May 17, 2006--The UD Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers will be attending the 15th annual National Student Steel Bridge Competition May 26-27 in Salt Lake City.

The team competed in the Mid-Atlantic regionals in both the steel bridge and concrete canoe competitions in April at the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown. UD's steel bridge team qualified for nationals by placing second in the competition. The concrete canoe team also fared well.

The competition is divided into two events. In the first event, the judging is based strictly on aesthetics. The second event tests the usability of the bridge. Each bridge must be assembled, weighed and then tested for strength. The assembly area is set up as a realistic layout with rivers and roads. Teams receive penalties for stepping off the roads or for dropping tools. The winning bridge is the lightest, strongest, and fastest assembled.

Junior Brian Walton, vice president of the National Society of Professional Engineers at UD, said the team has worked since the beginning of the school year to compete in the event. The bridge was a total team effort, with students sometimes staying up all night to get their work done, Walton said.

Students who took part in the competition included Matt Milner, Dane Stokes, Rachel Smith, Joe Challburg, Christi DeSisto, Evan Brodsky, John Connelly, Kevin Connor, Kris Weidner, Marc Petroro, Nick Ward, Ryan Cuzme, Brian Walton, Beatrice Arreola, Karen Mazzola, Audrey Yorke, Houston Brown, Alan Decktor, Doug Bower, Ryan O'Connor, Spencer Jacobson and Doug Charles.
