After graduation, during 1953, did research at the Soil Mechanics Laboratory of the Technical University of Munich.
Arrived in the USA on December 29, 1954. Became a citizen in 1960.
Upon arrival in the USA worked about one year at Hazelet & Erdal, Consulting Engineers in Chicago, as a bridge design engineer.
The postdoctoral year, 1958-59, spent at Courant's Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University, doing research in the non-linear theory of elasticity and stability theory.
Subsequently, joined the faculty of the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics of New York University as:

Taught a variety of courses in engineering mechanics. Received tenure from New York University in 1965.
From 1960 to 1962 was assistant to Professor Th. von Kármán in the area of non-linear shell buckling analyses and co-authored a paper with him.
In 1967 planned and built a Laboratory for Engineering Mechanics in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at New York University and was appointed its Director.
In the spring of 1973, when plans were made to merge the New York University School of Engineering and Science with the Polytechnic Institute, decided not to join the merged school and accepted an invitation to come to Princeton University as a Visiting Professor. Since September 5, 1978, Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Delaware.
During the past 30 years, Dr. Kerr went on several study trips to Western Europe visiting several universities and railroad research institutes. During the summer of 1974, he was a member of an official six man USA/FRA delegation to the USSR to study railroad track R&D. At the invitation of the US National Academy of Sciences, participated in a meeting at the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, in Moscow, in June, 1991, on Ice Mechanics.
In 1975, organized an international SYMPOSIUM ON RAILROAD TRACK MECHANICS, which took place at Princeton University. Editor of the Proceedings of the Symposium, entitled Railroad Track Mechanics and Technology published by Pergamon Press in 1978.
In 1977 assisted in organizing a SYMPOSIUM ON PRODUCTIVITY IN U.S. RAILROADS, which took place at Princeton University. Co-Editor with A. L. Kornhauser of the Proceedings of the Symposium, entitled Productivity in U.S. Railroads, published by Pergamon Press in 1980.
In 1980, was co-founder of the Institute for Railroad Engineering in Wilmington, Del.
