Brief Bio

Dr. Shenton graduated from the University of Delaware in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and earned a master's in 1984. He then spent two years working for the Department of Defense at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Aberdeen, Maryland, doing research in computational penetration mechanics. He earned his Ph.D. from The Johns Hopkins University in 1990 and then took a position at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland, as a Research Structural Engineer working in the Building and Fire Research Laboratory. There he conducted basic and applied research in earthquake engineering, with particular emphasis on seismic isolation and passive energy dissipation systems. Dr. Shenton joined the faculty of the University of Delaware in 1994. His work at UD has been both theoretical and experimental, focusing on two primary areas: (1) structural health monitoring and condition assessment of the civil infrastructure and (2) innovative systems and materials for low-rise construction. In the first area, one of his greatest fundamental contributions has been the development of a methodology for damage identification in civil structures, e.g., buildings or bridges, which is based on the redistribution of dead load stress in the structure. He has also conducted extensive research to understand how field testing and in-service monitoring can be used to better manage and maintain the nation's bridges. Dr. Shenton is also credited with developing low-cost sensor systems for bridge monitoring. In the area of materials for low-rise construction, he has focused on the response of woodframe shear walls and the development of bio-based composite materials. Dr. Shenton has been a PI, co-PI, or co-investigator on research projects totaling more than $3.1 million. His work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture,the Federal Highway Administration, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Delaware Department of Transportation, and industry. He has published more than 100 papers and technical reports. Dr. Shenton is currently serving as Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
