Alexander (Sandy) Whitney Alexander (Sandy) Whitney (56BCE) was Managing Partner of Whitney, Bailey, Cox & Magnani, the consulting firm he helped to found in 1977 and from which he retired 20 years later. Consistently listed among Engineering News-Record's top 500 firms, the company expanded its practice under Whitney's leadership to include about 200 professionals working in four states in all aspects of civil and structural engineering as well as architecture. Whitney's career in the engineering consulting field began after he graduated from UD, where he studied civil engineering and played varsity lacrosse. In 1964, he completed an MS degree in engineering at The Johns Hopkins University. he then worked briefly for Maryland's Mass Transit Administration, managing a feasibility study for the construction of a rail rapid transit system for the Baltimore Metropolitan area. His career included many complex projects such as the Metro Systems for Washington and Baltimore, expansion of Baltimore's Dundalk Marine Terminal and the 1960s expansion of BWI Airport, and numerous highway, bridge and Department of Defense projects in New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. In 1992, his firm also provided the structural engineering design for UD's new chemistry building as well as for renovations to Brown Lab. Holding leadership positions in numerous professional organizations, Whitney was elected a Fellow of the ASCE, the American Council of Engineering Companies, and the Society of American Military Engineers. In 1988, he was named Civil Engineer of the Year by the Maryland Section of ASCE.
