Research

The UDUTC is led by Prof. Sue McNeil, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Delaware. Dr. McNeil earned her Ph.D. in civil engineering at Carnegie-Mellon University. Her research and teaching interests focus on transportation infrastructure management, with an emphasis on the application of advanced technologies, economic analysis, analytical methods, and computer applications. Dr McNeil is a member of the Executive Committee of the Transportation Research Board and the Board on Infrastructure and the Constructed Environment. She chairs the Transportation Research Board Committee on Asset Management. She chaired (1988-1993) the ASCE Urban Transportation Division Committee on Transportation Facilities Management and is a founding Associate Editor for the ASCE Journal of Infrastructure Systems. She is a registered professional engineer.

Each of our UDUTC projects has at least one graduate student research assistant. Click here for a list of our current students.

In addition to Prof. McNeil and the students, the following individuals and groups support and participate in the research, education, and technology transfer activities of the UTC:

  • Faculty affiliates in the UDUTC represent the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), the College of Human Services, Education, and Public Policy (CHEP), the College of Marine and Earth Studies (CMES), and the Disaster Research Center (DRC).
  • The UDUTC Project Selection Committee, which consists of representatives from the University and various transportation-related agencies, evaluates and selects research projects for the annual UDUTC.
  • The UDUTC Advisory Committee advises Center administration on research direction, curriculum, and technology transfer activities.
  • Each project has at least one graduate assistant and in some cases an undergraduate researcher.
  • Diane Kukich writes news releases, serves as editor of the UDUTC newsletter, and assists in proposal and report writing. She holds a master's degree in English from the University of Delaware. She has more than 25 years' experience in research administration, public relations, and technical writing on engineering topics.
  • Marikka Beach serves as administrative assistant of the UDUTC. She organizes meetings, schedules seminars, solicits proposal reviews, etc.
  • Debbie Whitesel serves as the account manager for the UD-UTC. She manages and reconciles the accounts.
